Must-have equipment for flat lay photography

And I promise it’s not going to break the budget!

I’m going to share a few things you should have in your equipment kit when creating flat lay content. Continue reading for more!

  1. Blue Tack or Clear Museum Wax. Both are really great for keeping items in place, especially circular items that don’t like to keep still 😂. Blue Tack can be found at any hardware store and is less than $2.00. A little certainly goes a long way! Clear Museum Wax is another option. Again, a little goes a long way! however, I’ve found with museum wax is it can be sometimes difficult to remove and can leave an oil residue. Be mindful of this if you’re using a colorful backdrop.

Blue Tack can be found at a hardware store or Amazon

Clear Museum Wax

  1. Clear Wire. I found a really great option on Amazon. You can click here. Clear wire is really great if you’re trying to suspend items in air or keep straps for purses in place or suspended in air. Definitely a great investment for sure!

  2. White Boards. White boards are amazing for various reasons. They’re great for filling shadows and working as a reflector or can be used as backdrops. You can order in bulk from art supply stores. The common size that I use is 20” x 30”

  3. Binder Clips. You can find heavy duty binder clips on Amazon like these here. These are really great if you’re going to shape clothing or fabric in place.

  4. Double Sided Tape. I use double sided tape when I’m laying colored card stock paper on top of white board and I wanted to eliminate any shadow

  5. Gaffer Tape. Gaffer Tape is heavy duty tape used in professional photography studios. Gaffer’s tape is a game changer and pretty much can hold anything in place such as your seamless backdrop. It’s one of the more expensive items on the list, but it’s totally worth it. I’d recommended buying a 2 pack to get more bang for your buck. Even better? You can reuse pieces of gaffer’s tape as well.
